Are GunBroker.com's Additional Listing Enhancements Worth It?

Posted by AJ Koenes on Sep 1st 2026

Short answer: no. We tested GunBroker's paid listing enhancements twice, years apart, and both tests failed. We wound the channel down in July 2026.

This post used to be an open question. It is not anymore. We have the billing statements, the support tickets, and the sales figures from both attempts, so here is the whole record.

What the enhancements cost

These are the prices we were billed, taken from our own account statements.

Service Price What it is supposed to buy
Featured $2.95 Priority placement in search results
Highlight $2.00 Yellow row background in results
Showcase $4.95 Rotation on the home page
Sponsored Offsite $7.00 Ads on partner sites
Sponsored Onsite $4.00 Right-rail ad on search pages
Boldface $1.00 Bold title in results
Colored Title $1.00 Red, green, or blue title
View Counter $0.50 Counts views on your listing

Read that last row again. The view counter is a paid add-on. If you do not buy it, your listing reports zero views forever. That detail matters later.

The first test

The original version of this post went up in 2019. We picked our Pick and Pluck pistol case, a proven seller and a Best Seller on Amazon at the time. The basic listing sold within days. So we bought every enhancement on the menu.

Twenty dollars and change, 29 views, 53 days left on the listing. Then it went sideways. We picked blue for the colored title and there was no way to change it, so we opened a support ticket on the 7th. The reply came on the 18th, eleven days later, saying it was fixed. It was not fixed. The title was still blue. As of that follow-up we had also not received the showcase, featured, and sponsored listing boost we paid for.

We wrote back explaining both problems.

The second test, and the numbers that ended it

Years later we gave the platform another chance with cases and accessories. This time we tracked every cent.

Line Amount
Optional Services billed, April 30 to June 9 $235.75
Gross sales, four orders from May 6 to July 1 $73.46
Enhancement cost as a share of those sales 321%
Credited back after two support tickets $20.90
Unrecovered $214.85, or 292% of sales

We were billed more than three dollars in placement fees for every dollar the channel booked in sales. The bulk of it was Featured at $112.10 across 38 listings and Highlight at $76.00 across the same 38, plus $34.65 of Showcase on seven more.

The relist trap

This is the part that turns a bad purchase into a recurring one.

Enhancements carry over when a listing relists, and they bill again. Every cycle. We did not find this in the fee schedule. We found it on a statement: a $4.95 charge on June 1 for Featured and Highlight on a relisted item, where nobody had selected those options for the relist.

There is no separate line item called a relist fee. The enhancements simply bill again at their original prices, attached to the new item number. A listing carrying Featured and Highlight costs $4.95 every time it relists. Add Showcase and it is $9.90. The trigger is expiry, not a decision: set a listing to relist until it sells and you have agreed to buy those enhancements again and again, quietly, for as long as the listing lives.

202 in gunbroker fees and nothing to show for it

We had 32 listings carrying options into a single relist window. The projected re-bill was about $178.20, in one day, for placement we had already paid for once.

Turning them off is harder than turning them on. Enhancements can only be attached when a listing is created through the API, and there is no field to remove them afterward. There is no endpoint to end a listing either. The removal paths available to us were the web interface or GunBroker support.

The measurement said zero

GunBroker's own records reported zero views on all 37 of our active listings. Not low. Zero. That includes all 34 listings carrying paid Featured, Highlight, or Showcase options, across a paid window of more than 42 days.

It gets stranger. Several of those same zero-view listings showed one to three watchers. A watcher is someone who found the listing and chose to follow it. Nobody watches an item they never saw. GunBroker owns both numbers, and the two cannot both be right.

We put that in front of support with the item numbers attached. They did not reconcile the contradiction, correct the counter, or explain it. What we got back was marketing copy describing what Featured, Highlight, and Showcase are supposed to do, plus two screenshots covering three of the thirty-four billed items, taken well after the billing periods had closed. For the other thirty-one items, nothing at all.

Months later, their technical team confirmed all of this in writing: the view counter "returns the number of times the item is viewed", Showcase serving is not logged ("We do not log when served"), and "We do not capture impressions for the Sponsored listings". A zero on the one record they keep, and no records behind the rest.

Sponsored got even less. The self-service advertising product that once gave sellers impression and click reports was retired in January 2025, so Sponsored Onsite and Sponsored Offsite are now billed with nothing on the seller's side to show the ad ever ran. When we asked for that data, support answered in writing that nowhere in the fees page does it say performance data will be provided. That was both the answer and the denial.

How support handled it

The dispute ran through July 2026 across two tickets.

  • The first denial rested on a claim that our listings were created between April 10 and April 22 with enhancements already enabled. Their own statements date every enhancement fee to April 30. We pointed this out. The date problem was never addressed.
  • An agent told us Optional Service fees are non-refundable once used, without establishing that anything had been used.
  • A specialist drew a distinction on July 13 between listing enhancements and advertising services, and credited $11.00 of sponsored fees on that basis. On July 14 he reversed his own distinction to deny the rest.
  • The Featured and Showcase fees were refused. After every credit they ever issued, $138.85 of those two line items remains unrecovered. The screenshots covered three items. No placement or performance record was produced for the billed listings across their paid periods.

We recovered $20.90 of $235.75. That is 8.9% and Gunbroker enfoces ACH to prevent chargebacks:

Why we do not sell on GunBroker

The enhancements are the smallest of the three reasons.

Buyers who do not pay. Two of our four GunBroker orders closed at auction and never paid. This is not our characterization. It is GunBroker's: their August statement carries a line reading "Non Paying Buyer Credit" for each of the two items. They refunded their own commission on both, $1.62 at a time, and kept the $4.95 in enhancement fees we had paid to promote one of those listings. Half the order book failing to pay, on a channel this small, is not a nuisance. It is the channel.

Fees that re-bill themselves. A cost you have to remember to cancel, on a platform where cancelling is manual and there is no API field to do it, is not a cost you control.

Support that decides before it checks. A denial written on dates the company's own statements contradict is not a decision about our case. It is a decision made without reading it.

Any one of these is survivable. Together they made the channel cost more attention than it returned, so we wound it down in July 2026. Our active listings fell from 37 to 5 on July 21 and our last order came in on July 1. A few legacy listings are still running out their clock. We are not relisting behind them. Our cases and accessories are sold direct at Cedar Mill Firearms and through the retail channels that carry us.

If you still list there

Our experience is one seller's, and other sellers run the channel well. If you are one of them, four things we wish we had known:

  1. Buy the $0.50 view counter on every listing before you buy a single placement. It is the only seller-side number you get, and without it you are paying $2.95 a listing on faith.
  2. Check what your automatic relist setting is actually agreeing to. Enhancements ride along and bill again on every cycle.
  3. Test one enhancement on one listing against an identical listing with none. We bought the whole menu at once and learned nothing about which line item, if any, worked.
  4. Screenshot your own listings during the paid window. If you ever need to show a placement did not run, that record has to be yours, because theirs arrives late and covers three items.

Questions we get asked

Are GunBroker's listing enhancements worth the money?

They were not for us. We were billed $235.75 in Optional Services against $73.46 in sales, and GunBroker's own records reported zero views on every listing carrying a paid option.

Do GunBroker listing enhancements charge again when a listing relists?

Yes. Enhancements carry over to the relisted item and bill again at full price on every cycle. We confirmed it with a $4.95 charge on a June 1 relist where nobody had selected those options.

How much does a GunBroker relist cost if my listing has enhancements?

The enhancements re-bill at their normal prices, so a listing carrying Featured and Highlight costs $4.95 each time it relists, and one also carrying Showcase costs $9.90. Set to relist until sold, that repeats on every expiry with no further action from you.

Why does my GunBroker listing show zero views?

Views are only tracked if the $0.50 View Counter was purchased on that listing. If you did buy it and the counter still reads zero while the listing shows watchers, those two numbers contradict each other, and only GunBroker can reconcile them.

Can you remove enhancements from a GunBroker listing through the API?

No. Enhancements can only be set when the listing is created. There is no update field to remove them, so removal has to be done in the web interface or by support.

Does Cedar Mill Firearms still sell on GunBroker?

No. We wound the channel down in July 2026. Our listings fell from 37 to 5 on July 21, our last order came in on July 1, and we are not relisting behind the few that remain.
